Lost And Then I Found

On my way to work this morning I found a woman's lost hand bag sitting right in the middle of the sidwalk. It's got no money or ID in it, but does have some credit and grocery cards. The lack of cash makes me suspect I'm not the first to find it. I tried 411 for the name on the cards with no luck. So my question for you is now what do I do? Do I drop it off at a police station? Put it on Craigslist lost-n-fond? Shred the cards and toss it? Bury it in the back yard?

Height Piazza

The powers that be decided to close Montague Street on Sundays in July to make a Brooklyn Heights Piazza. It's a really nice part of our regular walks to Borough Hall and then down to the farmer's market in Dumbo.

A Number 1, Please

My Lovely Wife and I recently gave up restaurant food for 30 days. This included everything from fancy joints, to delivery pizza, to deli sandwiches. My goal was to get some blog fodder, like Rob Cochran, to develop some habits that reduce my dependency on eating out all the time, and to save some money. My wife was also looking at the health benefits, because typically everything in a restaurant is slathered in butter and salt. That's why it's soooo good, but also bad for you.

I actually learned to plan more than one meal ahead. I survived without hanging with General Tso. We made exceptions for any free meals from work and for some family emergency travel. Other than that, I was pretty true to the goal. Once, I had to make my boss buy me a BLT so as to be within the limits.

What did I learn? Yes you do save money, feel better, and lose weight by eating in more often. We had some great meals to. The mlw makes an awesome asparagus risotto. On a tight time line I can whip up some Macaroni de la Diablo, recipe to be posted someday. The inconvenience is not as bad as I expected either. The goal now is to use all this knowledge to reduce the amount I eat out. However, this photo shows that on Monday I needed a Big Mac. Sometimes things just have to be.

Railfest!

I encountered Railfest while waiting for the Pennsylvanian to whisk me from Altoona back to Brooklyn. Altoona Railfest is a 3-day train festival that includes excursion rides in cars pulled by the lovely E8 diesel engine pictured here. Next year I might have to go for the whole thing.

Moving A Concrete Deer

What have you been up to? Me…quite a bit. I'm home in Altoona helping my mom out while my dad is a bit under the weather. Some friends of the family decided to do something beyond awesome and put a concrete floor in my parents' garage (many more pics of that to come, currently my hands are too tired to do more than one). One of the hardest jobs was removing a concrete deer that had somehow wandered in.

I'm no shrinking violet and the two guys to my right are way stronger than I am and it took all of our energy to get that deer onto the forklift.

Do you have a friend that has a forklift? You should.

Scooter Likes A Little Home

I still want to buy some land in the Catskills and build a few little homes (my father-in-law says, "You can build a clubhouse in my backyard if you want.") Matt just sent this photo. Normally, Scooter spends his special time under the bed. However, Matt bought a new bed that is too low to the ground for him to fit. Scooter would stick his head underneath with his chubby behind still poking out, legs churning. To solve this, Matt bought a pet carrier that he put in a spare room, expecting Scooter to discover it in the following days. Four seconds later, Scooter was in the carrier. Three hours later, he was still in it, smiling, and that's when this photo was taken.

On a side note, I want to build cob house beside my little home.

Welcome to BrooklynTrout.com!

Hi All,

I've moved my site to here. I plan on keeping it forever as photo sharing tool and a platform for my writings, experiments, and just general rants. This will be easier at this location, rather than the former domain name.

So what's been going on. Here's a braindump in no random order:

  • Baltimore has some nice places and some really, really nasty parts. I saw a couple in a heroine stupor hanging off a bench in front of the court house. I saw a gang chasing a man and obviously threatening him with something worse than running into moving traffic because that's what he did. It's sad to see neighborhoods turned into fearful hells by poverty, drug trade, and junkie muggings.
  • My wife and I are trying to go 30 days without eating restaurant food. I'm doing it for the challenge and the experience. She's doing it soley to lose weight (restaurant food is dripping with butter, that's why it's soooo good!). So far I feel great. I've actually gotten more organized in the rest of my life by getting my shit together to get groceries and remembering to pack my lunch. God, I want a Big Mac.
  • This video of a pet hippo made my wife transcendant when the dog and the hippo cuddle at the end.
  • My father has been a bit ill, so we've spent a great deal of time
visiting. He's feeling better now, so we're all excited about that.
  • I hate summer.
