W&C in DC

Walks snapped the shot of me with a pregnant C and a hot (both literally and metaphorically) Susan. I snuck down to DC this weekend to catch-up with old friends at Janine's awesome rooftop shindig. Judy also showed and Lauren was my co-pilot (God was in the Hamptons).

I like DC. It's not like NYC. Hot. Political. I saw lots of "Taxation Without Representation" license plate and business signs that said "Proud to be Black-owned." The folks there have a opinions and a love of granite. I definitely like to get down there once a year. It just always seems to be mind-meltingly hot.

Our Team Won The Soho House Trivia Night – Alright

A contingent of my coworkers attacked the model retreat The Soho House last week for their trivia night. We formed two teams: Team Domination – lead by Dave, and Team Dave Sux – lead by me.

Before the competition began, the emcee anounced that Virgin Airlines was sponsoring the night and the first prize was a free roundtrip ticket on their new premium economy service to London.

After a few rounds, we were solidly in the lead, but team #6 was closing a bit. Dave added a caption to his likeness and also loudly rooted four the other contenders. However, his hopes of seeing us fail were dashed and we won. So one of these days I am off to London, courtesy of Soho House and Virgin. Cheers.

I Want A New Camera

While hiking a few weeks ago I borrowed my mom's Nikon digital SLR and I gotta say…wow. It even makes some of me lazy shooting look almost arty. Back in April, my friend Rachelle received one as a loaner for a blogosphere promotion that Nikon was doing. If anyone in marketing from Nikon stumbles upon this page (notice me dropping keywords: photography, prominent, photo-blogging) I can guarantee that the SLR would make it to the top of several highpoints this year.

I pimp me.

This shot is of cattails sprouted in what used to be an enormous beaver damn in Prince Gallitzen State Park. The beavers have moved on, which makes me sad. They used to help us getty really, really muddy.

Done.

Last night actually. We unbelievably found two copies in a random book shop in the San Juan airport on the way home. We had two waiting in our mailbox but also a plane delayed, so purchase we did. Best delayed flight ever.

Yes I am a nerd.

Planter’s Punch

3 types of rum + 5 types of juices + 3 glasses = …huh? Yeah! The beach is awesome.
Weather is here. Wish you were awesome! That never gets old to me.

Sweet, Sweet Corn

There are five things you should do every summer:

  • Swim in the ocean
  • See a baseball game
  • Ride a roller coaster
  • Sit out by a campfire
  • Eat fresh sweet corn

Baronner's Farm Market

So far, I've only checked off one of those, but oh was that some good corn. Baronner's Farm Market in Hollidaysburg, PA picks it fresh at dawn, before the heat of the day can ruin the flavor. You need to get there in the morning, because it sells at shortly after lunch. Read the sign and follow the instructions. Cooked that day, the resulting cobs are explosions of sweet North American goodness. Hallelujah to the maize! It's not terrible on day two, but nothing compares to corn picked and eaten on the same day.

We only bought a dozen ears and the when the delightful corn matron told me the price was $5, I freaked out. My parents apologized for the high prices, misinterpreting my utter disbelief at how cheap it was. The same bag would be $10 at Whole Foods and not near as good. If anyone as luck at a farm market, let me know.

Cooked Corn...Yum.

Prince Gallitzen State Park

Nestled in the middle of nowhere, but close to my parents' house in the Alleghenies, lies Prince Gallitzin State Park. The park encompasses a tract of forest and Glendale Lake. My family spent many weekends picnicking and sailing there when I was growing up. At a young age I would solo a Sunflower sailboat over every square inch of water. It was not the first sign of my misanthropic nature. Not at all.

We couldn't sail this trip, so we hiked instead. The park was beautiful, but I was really surprised to see it run down a bit and under utilized. For a Sunday in July, the crowds were not crowds. The lake was mostly empty in fact. This fit well with my now refined misanthropism, but still was a bit sad. People in Central PA should be doing more sailing and less NASCAR watching. SAW

For father's day my brothers and I chipped in to get my dad a new toy. Presenting the Hitachi C12LSH Sliding Compound Miter Saw. Featuring LED angle guidance display, laser sighting, and a 12-inch carbide tipped blade, this machine will make compound cuts in anything that doesn't move or that has been tied down.

The accompaning cart folds to store the entire set-up vertically to save shop space. The unit fits through doors and has oversized rubber wheels allowing it to reach any corner of the construction site.

My favorite part about the whole thing is that it looks nasty. Jerry writes, "Is Dad's new saw a Decepticon?"

Saw II

I think I could write tool catalogs if the pay was decent.
