Nestled in the middle of nowhere, but close to my parents' house in the Alleghenies, lies Prince Gallitzin State Park. The park encompasses a tract of forest and Glendale Lake. My family spent many weekends picnicking and sailing there when I was growing up. At a young age I would solo a Sunflower sailboat over every square inch of water. It was not the first sign of my misanthropic nature. Not at all.
We couldn't sail this trip, so we hiked instead. The park was beautiful, but I was really surprised to see it run down a bit and under utilized. For a Sunday in July, the crowds were not crowds. The lake was mostly empty in fact. This fit well with my now refined misanthropism, but still was a bit sad. People in Central PA should be doing more sailing and less NASCAR watching.
