We took the commuter rail to visit some friends who had left Manhattan for quiet and quaint Princeton. Along with a nice dinner, we took a walk around the famous campus.
I'll confess, I have an Ivy League chip on my shoulder from the 5 gazillion New Yorkers I've met who don't know the difference between "Penn" and "Penn State," but are happy to look down their noses at the latter. Because of that, my impression on Princeton college was never going to be wonderful and I saw what I expected to see--a place that is a lot less fun than Penn State with no where near as many lovely co-eds. The dudes were ugly and gaunt too. In Princeton's defense though, I did also notice a lack of choads, which PSU has in abundance.
If I put my bad attitude aside, I can mention that the campus is lovely (but small) and the town is very nice and walkable. It's like State College, but without the mountains, rampant public urination, and 28 thousand women between the ages of 18-22. Much less hippies, also, which is nice.
My friends' homes were amazing and they all seem to have the commute down. I'm still getting over the shock of moving to Brooklyn, but I can see the attraction of a town like Princeton. However, for now I'll stand by my current plan of living as close to the center of New York city as I can OR moving to a remote area of Montana. The in-between involves too much mowing until the kids are old enough to do it.
