One Night at the 5 Burros

On Saturday, it was hot, very hot. With humidity it felt well over 100 degrees. I had been running that morning early in an effort to beat the heat, but it was already 90. I ran past a brand new bar on Columbia Street, called 5 Burros. I wanted to go in and beg for a beer because I had no money. Instead I went home, but convinced my wife and our friends to go back later. To our delight, the tiny bar at the front hid a shady, large garden in the back. By sitting there very still and sipping cold, light beers, we were able to not melt.

It also turns out that this was the fourth day of business for this 5 Burros and their first Saturday night. The kitchen was slammed, so rather than hurry out people like us who were just drinking, they were grateful for us holding our position. The owners, Marla and George, joined our table and the whole party celebrated a grand opening. We had planned on an early night, but Marla's stories kept us there until close. It was one of those random, awesome adventures that just happen sometimes on hot, crappy days.
